Description

Main Point: When pride enters in, a mere man may start to believe that he’s God’s gift to mankind.

Synopsis:

  • Cilantro thinks he’s better than all the other herbs –but in reality he’s just more overbearing.
  • A comedic look at the foibles of pride; Cilantro who uses a French accent is quite indignant with the line of questioning from the off-camera interviewer.
  • Cilantro is a bit defensive—bragging that he is more potent than any common herb and questioning why this small little leaf creates such a stir.
  • He cannot contain himself when compared to parsley—and dismisses the analogy saying he “uses parsley as toilet paper”.
  • Cilantro goes so far as to say that Jesus is the light of the world and he is the spice of the world.
  • There’s one cut-away to an incident where he charges in slapping a chef who is putting cilantro aside which gives the video a mockumentary feel.
  • Cleverly filmed—Cilantro is a lovable egotist and his costume adds to the humor.

Application:

  • Part of our human sin nature is to be prone to pride and being overbearing—this video broaches the issue of pride in a non-threatening yet effective way.
  • Universal appeal—everyone is at least vaguely familiar with cilantro and its use in salsas—and we all encounter overbearing people – or perhaps have that struggle ourselves.
  • Cilantro’s question – “How can a little leaf cerate such a stir” is a question we can ask ourselves about our tongues—creating a stir.
  • When we see the issue of pride play out in an over the top performance, it makes us take note—not to want to come off that way.

Suggested Uses:

  • Sermon-starter on pride
  • Children’s church study on pride

Biblical Reference:

  • Pride comes before a fall
