Description

Main Point:  When is enough--enough in the life of the believer?

Synopsis:

  • Affluent homes juxtaposed with lower middle-class if not impoverished homes as two men discuss owning a nice home when there’s poverty in the world.
  • The video has the effect of someone passing by in a car—repeatedly seeing affluence and poverty.
  • Two off-screen male voices engage in dialogue (see below for transcript).
  • The only visual departure from homes is the exterior of a church with the focus on a statue of Jesus.
  • Superimposed over the statue is a text: If you want to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give to the poor and you will have treasures in Heaven. Then come follow me.
  • The conversation between the two voices allows the audience to ponder the central question of what are we to do with the resources the Lord has provided without becoming too invasive.
  • Shot in black and white and muted colors, the visuals are striking. Greatly enhanced by chilling music; the shots are set against a black back-ground and appear as if they are part of a 1950s TV set.

Application:

  • Jesus said that the poor would always be among us—yet he also told the rich young ruler to sell everything he had and follow him. Discerning what to do with our finances is always a question to the believer.
  • It’s good for believers assess their financial stewardship—how much should be amassed for this life and how much should be given to the less fortunate and the Lord’s work.
  • The video leaves the questions open ended – and clearly “not knowing” is probably a good answer—as the old idiom states—it’s not an issue of how much money one has but rather whether or not the money has them.
  • The Christian life is one of contemplating God’s word – it’s with that standard that individuals can make decisions based on His counsel.

Suggested Uses:

  • Sermon-starter on the love of money
  • Also excellent resource for Bible study

Biblical Reference:

  • You cannot serve both God and money.
  • The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil
