Description

Main Point:  We’re to go into all the world, making disciples of all nations –but today the Great Commission’s intent has been altered by people who should know better.

Synopsis:

  • Comedic look at the sad state of affairs within the evangelical church as a cast of stereotypical characters are asked to define evangelism.
  • “The best way to tell them about Jesus is to tell them about hell” asserts Pastor Chuck Pearl who sports a bad wig and also believes there are five not four spiritual laws.
  • Street Evangelist Steve Stevenson talks intelligible at people through a megaphone and holds a daunting sign “the end is near”. The video closes with him dragging his sign down the sidewalk.
  • “Evangelism is simple—God wants you rich” proclaims televangelist Dick Hyperion who sits poolside outside his pink mansion. He marginalizes his gardener—calling him “boy” and although he knows he’s being interviewed, habit forces him to look into the camera as a means to sway people.
  • Operation Love Ministries sends out two masked men to abduct a young guy, blind fold him and while they are interrogating him and holding him against his will, yell at him about faith, hope and love.
  • Postmodernist Lars Thornheel and Tom Flowers who sings “Highway to Heaven” represent those among us who need “evangelizing” – yet they unfortunately appear no zanier than those who would seek to convert them.
  • Parody is well executed with high production quality.

Application:

  • Do evangelicals who take surveys – professing to be Christians really know what the term means?
  • Are we so “agenda” focused within the Christian faith—that we’ve missed the bigger picture.
  • If our own interests or agendas are more important than Christ’s message then we will treat those who need to hear the Good News with contempt or like objects for us to gain from.
  • The two greatest commandments are simple: —Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength—and love your neighbor as yourself—the guys depicted in the video seem to have all failed to carry that mandate out.

Suggested Uses:

  • Evangelism series
  • Bible study—several characters could serve as springboards for “movements within Evangelicalism” that are not focused on a Christ-centered Gospel.
  • Study on Postmodernism—how do we present truth when we don’t know it?

Biblical Reference:

  • And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you.
