Description

Stations of the Cross: Gethsemane

Includes both titled and untitled versions

    Synopsis:

  • Pastoral, calm imagery of a grove of olive trees is intercut with nature footage and close-ups of olive branches.
  • Gethsemane was on the Mount of Olives, and Jesus' retreat there could have looked something like the scenes presented here.
  • Scripture text (in titled version) is presented:
  • Mark 14:32-34 - They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.
  • “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”
  • Psalm 42:1-2 - As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?
  • Mark 14:35 - Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed... “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
  • Psalm 42:11 - Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

Conversation:

  • Jesus was honest with God the Father about the state of his heart in Gethsemane. Is it difficult for us to do the same? Why / why not?
  • In his wrestling with God's will, Jesus ultimately submitted. Why is it difficult for us to submit to the unknown / unseen will of God?
  • What does Gethsemane teach us about fear, doubt, terror, worry, and prayer?
  • Is there a quiet place you can withdraw to, like Gethsemane, where you pour your inner heart out to God in honest conversation?
  • Why are Gethsemane spaces of value in our lives / faith?
  • The psalms are included in this video because they reflect how Jesus might have given word to the state of his troubled heart. Is there scripture / truth that you draw upon in times of trouble?
  • How do you handle trouble, worry, and fear?
