Description

Main Point:  The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

Synopsis:

  • Thought provoking video of human condition using 1950s circa footage as a narrator goes through a list of things and situations that we think will make us happy.
  • Even though the pursuit of happiness is guaranteed in the Declaration of Independence, it can become an endless endeavor, often causing people to live in the future.
  • Prerequisites for happiness include: getting married, having a child, waiting for them to be grown, having a nicer car, owning a home, having the home paid off, getting a divorce, getting another job, finishing school losing or gaining weight and the list goes on.
  • Maybe happiness will be right around the corner to Friday night or Sunday morning, or next spring or summer. Or perhaps when one is off welfare, or on the first or the fifteenth of the month. Or when one has a drink or sobers up. Maybe happiness comes at death.
  • Question posed at end: “Are you truly happy. A single man sits in a car.  The final frame is a fire erupting.
  • Interesting to watch – the use of both color and black and white authentic footage juxtaposed with the narrator talking about issues we face to day brings into focus that these aren’t today’s issues – these are timeless human heart issues.

Application:

  • This has an excellent application for everyone who is looking for the next thing, especially in an instant gratification culture.
  • Futility of not living content right now is clear.
  • Humans tend to look ahead –when true happiness comes from within – relationship with the Lord.
  • We should not live our lives wishing it away – it is fleeting and we should savor each season we’re in.

Suggested Uses:

  • Bible study –what is Happiness?
  • Great sermon-starter for distinguishing between happiness and joy.

Biblical Reference:

  • Paul’s admonishment for contentment –in all things.
