Description

Main Point:  In God We Trust is a phrase on our currency but those words are antiquated and meaningless to some.
Synopsis:
  • America is at a cross-roads—do we really believe there’s merit to putting our trust in God or is that too politically incorrect?
  • “Stars and Stripes” plays as the video opens with a flag background with frames of the words “In God We Trust” followed by old video footage of Americans in a more innocent time superimposed over the flag.
  • Interviewer asks why does it say “In God We Trust” on our currency and receives a variety of answers.
  • The first man says it’s because our founding fathers believed in God –but that it continues to this day because of tradition. Children have a vague understanding of its origins and are more interested in receiving a free dollar bill.
  • One woman credits God for taking good care of her and supplying her with a good job and good life. Another who professes to be a Christian says she doesn’t want the Gospel forced on others. Another guy says that having the words in God we trust doesn’t preclude people from worshipping Ala or Buddha.
  • The most poignant response comes from a Police chief who speaks of the evil he sees in his line of work and that he’s glad that he doesn’t shoulder the burden because his personal faith is in Jesus Christ. Perhaps the saddest response is from a father who says he trusts no man and expresses doubt about God. The last person interviewed who says he has no faith in God, stands in front of posters of rock stars.
  •  Solid use of graphics encouraging prayer for leaders. Backgrounds fluctuate and include the American flag, U.S. Constitution, and a dollar bill.
  • Visually very interesting because of the wide range of techniques –ranging from backgrounds to picture cut-outs and sizes, and frames. It’s a tribute to American diversity.

Application:

  • Very timely for today’s popular discussion on separation of church and state and what it really means and what the founders intended for it not to mean.
  • The US citizenry doesn’t seem to understand that the government was founded upon godly principles.
  • Americans often take freedom for granted.
  • In order to be critical thinkers – rather than being politically correct, individuals  need to be equipped with some basic knowledge.
Suggested Use:
  • Bible study on Christian heritage
  • Sermon-starter on what it mans to be a critical thinker.

Biblical Reference:

Some trust in chariots, some in ….but we trust in the LORD our God.
