Description

Stations of the Cross: Nails

Includes both titled and untitled versions

    Synopsis:

  • A cross made of ordinary lumber is painted and finished.
  • In a low-lit room, three ancient-looking rustic nails are hammered into the cross with a crude mallet.
  • Further, many modern construction nails are hammered into the cross.
  • In the final shots of the piece, different angles reveal the cross entirely covered with nails.
  • Scripture text overlays (in titled version):
  • Mark 15:25-26 - It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS.
  • Mark 15:33 - At noon, darkness came over the whole land...
  • Mark 15:34 - And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?”
  • Luke 23:34 - "Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."

Conversation:

  • The tone of this piece suggests that we are all implicated with the death of Jesus on the cross, and we have all taken up the mallet and grabbed a nail, so to speak. How is it that generation after generation, mankind is accountable to Jesus' work on the cross?
  • Is it difficult to imagine the physical sufferings of Jesus?
  • Is mankind good or evil? Does humanity need saving / a savior?
  • Do you feel responsible for the death of Christ?
  • Do you feel a personal connection with Christ's passion and death? Why / why not?
  • What are the nails that you repeatedly pick up as you approach the cross?
  • What does the text "Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing" mean? What does it say about the nature of the Christ?
