Description

Main Point:  Non-believers don’t understand Christian culture

Synopsis:

  • A cynical radio talk show host and a caller discuss what they consider absurdities of Christianity – while old footage of several televangelists including E. V. Hill, Jerry Falwell, Jimmy Swaggert, and Pat Robertson is shown.
  • A radio host mocks the Christian faith saying that he could not worship someone who had killed his son.
  • The host goes on to attack the practice of communion, berating Christians for their beliefs while they call others barbaric.
  • The video ends with a darkened bar with a male solo of “Jesus, Jesus, how I trust you…”
  • Interesting perspective on how Christians are perceived in the culture by non-believers.

Application:

  • The Christian faith continues to raise eyebrows 2,000 years after Jesus walked the earth.
  • As believers it’s important to take into consideration how we are perceived by the world—are we being persecuted for doing good or are our own fleshly actions garnering ridicule?
  • The Bible tells us that to those who are perishing, the mysteries of the Bible are misunderstood.
  • The challenge is always before us—how do we present the truth of the Gospel in a relevant manner?

Suggested Uses:

  • Sermon starter on “Outside looking in”
  • Apologetics – debunking the misconceptions about communion and God’s motive for sending Jesus to atone for our sins

Biblical Reference:

  • 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.
  • Matthew 5: 10-12 "What great blessings there are for the people that are treated badly for doing good! The kingdom of heaven belongs to them. People will say bad things against you and hurt you. They will lie and say all kinds of evil things against you because you follow me. But when people do those things to you, know that God will bless you. Be happy and glad. You have a great reward waiting for you in heaven. People did those same bad things to the prophets that lived before you."
