Description

Main Point:  No matter how long you’ve struggled to overcome something, once you allow faith to take root, victory is possible.

Synopsis:

  • Dad has been holding a “Mr. Bubbles Packet” as a golden carrot for 15 years as incentive for Marty to take the plunge off of the diving board.
  • Faith is central message: Opens with text: Feed your faith and doubt will starve to death. Closes with text: Fear knocked at the door and faith answered no one was there.
  • Father’s Love is a secondary theme --Dad assures his “Little Buddy” that he loves him and wants him to trust him –he wouldn’t have him do anything that he hadn’t already done himself.
  • The boy reluctantly walks with the father, lies on the board and finally stands. The father jumps in the pool, himself overcoming fear and waits for his son to jump to him.
  • Victory is in his blood – named for an uncle who was a Navy Seal, Marty is reminded of his lineage.
  • Celebrating the overcoming power of faith, the two enjoy blowing bubbles poolside.
  • Both characters are funny to watch – Marty wears goggles and life preserving gear suited for a child 10 years younger and Dad is outfitted with goggles and a nose piece.
  • Epic style music adds much to the comedic feel – as this rather minor event is being treated with such importance.
  • Filmmakers utilize extreme close ups and the color is rich—esthetically pleasing to watch.

Application:

  • Some of our fears are as unfounded and seemingly minor as Marty’s
  • No matter how long we have tried to deal a situation, with God’s help we can intervene
  • As a loving Father, God is patient with us – he tarries with us year after year wanting us to overcome our obstacles
  • Victory is possible – if we only knew how much greater God is than our problem, we’d probably think some of our fears are pretty silly

Suggested Uses:

  • Appropriate as Sermon Starter on Faith

Biblical Reference:

He did not give us a spirit of fear but of power and love and a sound mind

I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength
