The Shepherd's Candle - JOY

Get Flash Player

Description

Main Point: Joy—the third candle of the Advent Wreath symbolizes the joy that the birth of Jesus Christ brought to the world – although the shepherds were initially scared.

Synopsis:

  • Just as the shepherds were terrified when an angel of the Lord appeared to them, two pre-teen girls are scared to see a light outside their tent but are relieved when the intruder turns out to be one’s father who is inviting them to enjoy the beauty of the evening sky.
  • Video opens on a small tent pitched next to a suburban house at dusk. Two girls laugh and giggle inside until they see a flashlight—they are terrified to see the tent door unzip.
  • The father invites his daughter and her friend to walk through a nearby field and enjoy the evening sky – both girls marvel at the beauty.
  • High quality production quality. Three scriptures cited –along with a music from a verse from O Come, O Come Emmanuel (see below).

Application:

  • Sometimes the things we initially fear are the sources of great joy.
  • Just like the shepherds looked to the sky on the hillsides outside Bethlehem, so we must around to see the impact that the life of Jesus Christ had on the world.
  • It would be hard to find joy in this world had Jesus not been born.

Suggested Uses:

Third Sunday of Advent

Music Lyrics:

O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear.
Refrain: Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
